Day 26: Sorrento, Italy

Today we left Roma and headed to the Naples-Sorrento-Almalfi Coast area. We thought about heading into town in Naples for a slice of pizza when we changed trains, but abandoned the plan because we didn't feel like hauling luggage through town.

Sorrento is around the bay on an hour metro-style train ride from Naples, and you pass by Mt. Vesuvius on the way. After a little difficulty finding our hotel (particularly because everything was closed for Sunday and there was no one to ask or get a map from), we walked the 20 minutes to the center of Sorrento.

Sorrento feels like Disneyland-Italy. Everyone speaks English, prices are high, but the people and buildings look Italian. It's not bad, just different, and probably a good last hurrah with English before heading further south in Italy.

At night we lucked out being able to watch the Italy vs. Brazil soccer game at a bar. Unfortunately, in the final ten minutes of the first half, Brazil scored 3 goals and the game was pretty much over (no more goals scored). It is still fun to catch a futbol game with people that are passionate about it.

After the game we caught a late dinner, and half way through it began to absolutely pour. It wouldn't have been too big a deal to take a cab home, except that we spent our last Euro on a beer and the ATM machines decided they weren't going to give us any money. So we walked/ran twenty minutes home in a thunderstorm in flip flops sharing our small travel-size umbrella. We made it home, soaked, but we made it.
