Day 20: Cinque Terre

After yesterday's work out, we slept in a litttle (despite telling ourselves to wake up early to do the last trail before it got too hot). After a quick and light breakfast, we hopped on the ferry to city 4 to pick up the trail where we left off yesterday.

The last section was a 3 km hike that was about 2 hours long. It seemed to go straight up for about an hour before leveling off and eventually descending. This was the longest of the trails, and we noticed. This hike had two distinguishing features. First, and most importantly, there was no miracle bar. Second, the path got very narrow at points and railings were not always provided. Brooke's Dad descibed these sections as cliff hanging.

We managed to survive the hike and we stopped at the first establishment we could find in city 5. We had a refreshing beer and split a focaccia sandwich (Cinque Terre is also known for focaccia bread).

We wanted to do some swimming, and since we swam at city 5 yesterday, we took the ferry to city 4. After the hot ferry ride, we basically walked down the man-made stone pier and jumped right in the clear water.

We dried off and ate lunch at a restaurant that had photos of the owners and my bud and travel companion Rick Steves on the wall. If Rick ate there, it was sure thing (and it was).

We took the ferry back to city 2 and had another swim (narrowly avoiding a jelly fish situatuion) before walking back to our home city 1 along the easy trail D'Amore.

Tonight we had enough energy to play cards and drink our remaining wine while listening to Lou Prima softly playing through the headphones of an iPod turned all the way up. I (Kevin) am not sure it can get much better that this (then I got my first victory in Rummy with a last-hand comeback, and I was sure of it).

We all enjoyed Cinque Terre; tomorrow it's off to the Tuscan city of Siena.
