We arrived at 10 am, dropped off our bags at the hotel (which we looked up before we left, unlike in Lyon), and walked through the town. Why Avignon you ask? Well, mostly because it's on the way to Nice where we're meeting Brooke's parents tomorrow. In addition, however, it's a preserved city within big, old city walls and was where nine different popes were based while there were some disagreements within the church back a few centuries.
The main attractions are the pope's palace (which is essentially a castle, not a church) and the St. Benezet Bridge (of which only half remains). Avignon was a perfect one-day stop. We arrived at 10:30, and by 1:30 we were basically done with site-seeing. We didn't pay the 20 Euro to tour the palace, because both our guidebooks said it was a waste. We also didn't go into the museum with religious art. We were content to just roam the streets, stopping in shops and for occasional drinks or ice cream.
The city felt a little like Lyon in that there are old narrow roads and lots of restaurants, but its more touristy, despite only a fourth of the population at about 90,000 people.
That's it for today.
