We took the 11 hour (10 pm to 9 am) train from Prague to Budapest via Slovakia last night. It was interesting. Through a mistake in our understanding of reserving the sleeper cars, we got a normal second class cab without beds for the duration. Luckily we ended up having the car to ourselves, but every time the train stopped (which was a lot) there was the chance our privacy would end.
Speaking of privacy invasions. We would finally be sound asleep, lights out, and curtains shut, then when we crossed into a new country (Slovakia and Hungary) a person would burst in asking for our tickets in a Slavic language. Talk about a rude awakening. Each time we would pull out the wrong ticket while disoriented, making the conductor turn on the light and say more things to us until we got the right ticket out.
It was a very Eastern European experience, but it paid off. We were able to save hotel money and, more importantly, eliminate a travel day. That said, it'll probably be our last night train.
