Day 37: Barcelona

We're both liking Barcelona; it's a big, modern city with people from all walks of life (lots of characters here). Of all the cities we've been to so far, it seems like we could move and fit in here the easiest.

We started the day by going to a castle up on a hill top in Barcelona. Unlike other trips to panoramic views, we didn't need to hike. We rode a lift up, which was a comfortable enclosed car that probably fit 8, but it was just us two.

Up at the Castle we got to look out over the city and we read about an early 1900s uprising that was put down harshly by the government. We also found time for a beer, Estrella, which is everywhere here.

We took a different lift down from the castle because it is much higher (prep for Switzerland) and it lets out at the beach. We didn't bring suits or a towel, so we walked around looking to buy cheap ones. After finding guys trunks for $120 at a nearby store, we decided to just go in the shorts we were wearing (but we did find a towel along the way). We took a quick swim, tried to dryoff our clothes, and upon leaving what we found out was a topless beach, we found tons of cheap suits and cheaper towels.

We spent two hours in an internet cafe trying to plan out Switzerland, then finally headed out for some nightlife. We didn't really go clubbing, but we did enjoy several beers until about 3 am at a few bars near Las Ramblas and did some more people watching. One great beer we had was a Bock Domm, which was some sort of a dark Munich style beer (so the bottle said).

One last funny thing we saw in Barcelona. There were entrepeneurs on the streets holding six packs of Estrella selling them by the can. This was illegal, we found out, because as police would drive up they would hide the beer all over. The best spot was in the street, under a sewer cap/lid in a shallow recess. It was cartoon-like.

That's it for Barcelona, off to Geneve and Lausanne Switzerland tomorrow.
