Day 40: Lauterbrennen, Switzerland

Slow start in Bern, but Kevin was feeling better after some delicious bread at the hotel.

Our first stop was on top of a hill overlooking Bern. Climbing was an option, but we choose to take the Gerten-Bahn tram up the 800 ft hill instead. We took some panoramic shots from a tower on the hill. Kevin was beginning to get an appetite again, and after a snack it appeared he was back in action.

Back on the ground we walked to the largest gothic style cathedral in Switzerland, saw a giant Swiss clock, and headed to the train leaving for the Interlaken area.

The Interlaken train ride was very scenic. The train travels alongside the big Thunersee Lake and in-between the Alps. We are actually staying in a valley village, Lauterbrunnen, that is along the rail and lift paths that take people up to a few mountain tops (more on that tomorrow).

Lauterbrunnen is about 2600 ft above sea level and has 1000 residents. It feels, looks, and smells like we imagined a Swiss village would. It has cows, cheese, beer, and Germans; it's like Wisconsin in the mountains.

We explored our village, which only takes about 20 minutes to walk end-to-end, and hiked up towards the Stubbach waterfall. Being in the valley, waterfalls rain down towards us from melting snow above and flow down a river back towards the lakes of Interlaken. A path leads up to the waterfall and we walked partially under it.

After that, we got dinner and went to bed to rest up for our ascent to 9748 ft tomorrow.

PS- Hope everyone had a great 4th. We missed not being at the parade and Henry & Wanda's in the morning, and Uncle Jack & Aunt Diane's in the afternoon for fireworks.
