Brugges is not that big, and after a short bus ride we were in the city center, only 2 blocks from our hotel. We checked in and were ready to tackle our tough agenda, enjoy the things Belgium is known for: waffles, French fries, beer, and chocolate.
Apparently French fries are originally from Belgium, and since we were hungry, our first stop was to a French fry stand in the central (Markt) square. Most people order fries topped with a giant scoop of mayo. It looks as gross as it sounds, but no comment on the taste. We like to try local stuff, but can't do the mayo, so we ordered fries with curry ketchup instead (tasted great).
Our next plan was to go find a canal tour. Brugges has cool canals around the city, but they are part of a much smaller canal network than that of Amsterdam.
While looking for an ATM and canal tour tickets, we stumbled upon the "2be" bar/store. It has some 700 Belgian beers displayed in a Beer Wall, tons of Brugges beers available, and a store with aisles of Belgian beer and chocolate. We couldn't fight fate, so we enjoyed a local Brugges beer and watched the canal tours for awhile from the terrace.
We eventually made it on a canal tour boat ticket office, but we had enough time to stop at a chocolate shop before shipping off. Then we enjoyed a half-hour trip around the canals with an occasional chocolate.
We found a reasonable Italian place for dinner, then we went on to two bars to finish off the night. The first bar was just off the main square and had over 400 types of Belgian beer. The task was great and the menu heavy, but we found two to try. The second bar had a smaller selection (only a few pages of beer menu), but it was a little more off the beaten path. Delicious beers all around.
Brugges is working out for us.
