What a difference a day makes. Yesterday it was 95 and almost unbearable, today it was 55 and raining. This weather, along with a delayed train, lead us to abandon our planned 5 hour stop in Hallstat.
Instead, we stayed on our train to Salztburg in the fancy business class seats we accidentally and incorrectly took. When we finally arrived we roamed around the streets in the rain. Mozart's hometown is pretty small and is very walkable, in nice weather.
We avoided the rain by going into a museum about bathing (of al things) and a few churches. Unfortunately for us, we were soaked after a couple hours anyway, so we stopped back at our hotel for a good nap.
When we got up we felt we should do something, but it was already 9 pm. What else is there to do but go to an Austrian beer hall?
The Augultinee has made their own Brau since 1621, and like Lake Front Brewery, they serve it where they brew it. The beer hall was fun. You start by grabbing a half-liter or liter mug off the shelf, rinse it off in the fountain, pay the cashier a few bucks, then take your mug to the 70 year-old man tipping the wooden-barrel on an angle to get every drop out of the tap. Next you walk in and out of a series of big halls lined with wooden tables and find a seat, enjoy your beer, and repeat. The crowd was young and old, and a few rowdy tables were singing drinking songs, slinking mugs, and shouting Prost!
Unfortunately the hall stopped serving food right when we got there. We found another place to eat on the way home and Kevin got beef goulash. It only took one week for beef goulash to turn into a "safe play" food order.
We're hoping for better weather tomorrow to enjoy the town and its castle.
